Our school gardens are quieter than usual this winter without our students' daily visits to plant, harvest, and learn. Despite the quiet, amazing natural processes are occurring above and underground in the garden beds. As we anxiously await the pitter patter of footsteps back into our gardens, take a moment to join us on a journey through the winter garden. 

Like many of the farmers in our region, FRESHFARM’s Pop Up Food Hub takes a break over the winter to rest, regenerate, and prepare for the upcoming season. While the winter season may be a quieter time, the team is hard at work planning for the spring and laying a solid foundation for the year ahead.

FoodPrints garden clubs provide in-person opportunities for students and families to care for their school gardens and engage in hands-on garden science lessons-- and is a welcome way to bring students and families back to school during the pandemic.

Through all the challenges of 2020, FRESHFARM has remained committed to our mission to support sustainable agriculture and improve food access and equity in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Through FoodPrints live classes, our staff are engaging students in lessons based on our curriculum with creative adaptations for virtual learning. We are focusing on reinforcing academic learning, fostering independence, and bringing joy to learning, as we did while we were together in the classroom.

FRESHFARM’s food access work at our markets helps to provide fresh food to at-risk neighbors at affordable prices, and helps to make access to nutritious food more equitable. This fall, we’re supporting food access and equity across the DC metro area through our Thanksgiving FRESH Food Drive and the FRESH Match program. 

The Pop Up Food Hub facilitates connections between small farmers, local partners, and families in need to make sure everyone can enjoy equal access to nutritious, local produce -- even during a pandemic.
