We are thrilled to announce that the H Street NE farmers market (13th Street NE between H and EYE Streets) will shift to being open year-round starting in January 2025. This transition celebrates the two decades of vibrant community FRESHFARM has fostered in the neighborhood and the critical connection with regional farmers and food producers to keep our local food system strong for generations. Established in 2004 in a neighborhood that, at the time, had limited places to shop for fresh groceries, the FRESHFARM H Street NE Market quickly became a beloved gathering place for neighbors and a harbinger of improved food access in the District.

Block Party and Winter Operations

To mark our 20th anniversary and the transition to being a year-round market, FRESHFARM is planning a community block party at the market on December 14th, with music, sampling, family-friendly activities, and giveaways to mark the transition and anniversary.

Starting in 2025, the market will be open every Saturday, 9 am – 12:30 pm for the winter season (January through March) and will continue operating seamlessly from April through December. The market will host a rotating lineup of about a dozen farmers and producers, bringing a robust mix of seasonal fruits and vegetables, artisan baked goods, pastured meat and eggs, locally roasted coffee, distilled spirits, and more.

“Making our beloved H Street NE market a year-round destination not only supports regional farmers and producers, but it also strengthens community access to fresh, seasonal foods throughout the year,” said Hugo Mogollon, Executive Director of FRESHFARM. “Since its inception, this market has been an inclusive gathering place and a critical source of fresh food for residents. With this shift to year-round operations, we ensure access remains consistent and resilient, no matter the season.”

Food Access Trailblazer

FRESHFARM’s commitment to expanding food access has always been a cornerstone of its mission. In 2008, the FRESHFARM H Street NE Market was the first farmers market in Washington, DC, to accept SNAP/EBT. In 2009, the market was the first in Washington, DC, and among the first in the country to offer an incentive match, helping stretch federal nutrition dollars further for those in need. Over the past two decades, shoppers have spent over $250K in nutrition benefits and incentives at the H Street NE market. This trailblazing food access work, now available at all FRESHFARM farmers markets, has established this market as a pioneering example of how farmers markets can foster food security, create robust revenue streams for our local economy, and stoke community resilience.

Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen added, “I love having something to look forward to in 2025! This is a wildly popular market and I think that’s due to both the great selection of fresh produce and the certainty you’ll run into a friend as you move between stands. This is welcome news for everyone on the H Street corridor and the surrounding neighborhood.”
